7th Annual Purple Onion Festival

Come with friends and family. Dress in Purple or not. Meet your local farmers and the Purple Onion Mascot too ! Take a selfie on the Purple Onion Bench. Kids and adults alike are invited to write their  Eat Local Challenge Action on the Wall. Join us for the Dance for the Climate..sample the delicious local food served by local chefs  under the Taste of The Kawarthas Tent. And did we say enjoy the all day entertainment from local artists and jazz bands; and buy locally grown food from local farmers. And, sit in a brand new electric car or hybrid. Or hop on a  E bike to get a feel for where our personal and public transportation vehicles are heading. Oh yes you can buy some art from local artists and if you dance for the climate with us you might just meet Captain Climate Change.

Transition Town Peterborough is celebrating the culture and bounty of our exceptional community with its 7th Annual Purple Onion Festival and YOU’RE invited!! The Purple Onion Festival culminates the celebration of Local Food Month in Peterborough City and County. This family event deals with the very serious issue of climate change in every fun way we can think of! Fabulous food, dynamic interactive venues for all ages, music, dancing and fantastic vendors. TTP will be set up in a booth selling ‘I Love Local Food’ and Purple Onion festival T-shirts, and shopping bags. There will be buttons for everyone! Come see the role of local food and farmers in our economy. And of course, our Big Purple Onion will be milling around for pictures!

LOCAL FARMERS ON THE GREEN COMMONS
Millennium Park comes alive very September with this fantastic festival celebrating local farmers and our local food providers. Peterborough’s local food industry is changing and striving to get to know you! Come out to meet a farmer and get to know their business and their passion! Learn how you can get their food to your table! Bring your own recycle bags to carry your bounty home or purchase a new ‘Purple Onion Festival’ bag at the TTP booth!

TASTE OF THE KAWARTHAS
Sample Local Food Prepared by Top Local Chefs!
The star of the festival, The Taste of the Kawarthas is the experience not to miss! Taste the delicious samplings of 10 Kawartha chefs. Each chef will prepare unique dishes from locally grown sources, supporting local farmers, local jobs and therefore our local economy! How does it get any better than that!
Meet our Taste of the Kawarthas, Local Food Month Ambassador; Chef Gunther Schubert, C.C.C. (Certified Chef de Cuisine) He’ll be on-site sharing his passion for our local Peterborough food and culture scene!

Back by popular demand – our local Craft Beer Garden! Drinking local beer is an act of resilience. Yep! It cuts down Green House Gases (GHGs), supports local business and jobs and, well, just feels and tastes good!

One Of A Kind! Move over Cruise Night! Here comes the climate-responsible Electric Vehicle Meet! Kick some tires, check out the low, low cost of going electric, create cleaner air and reduce fossil fuel dependence! Sponsored by Peterborough Mitsubishi. We will also be presenting new electric cars from Toyota, Nissan, and Hyundai! Green Street will also be there with E-Bikes! Peterborough Distribution Inc. will be there with info on local charging stations and what’s new in Peterborough’s EV world!

EAT LOCAL CHALLENGE WALL
September is LOCAL FOOD MONTH! Good citizens eat as much local food as they can! Our local food providers work hard to bring homegrown healthy food options to our tables but we need much more to battle local food insecurity! Consider what you can do to support local food and inspire others by writing it on the big Eat Local CHALLENGE WALL at the Purple Onion Day. Then put it out on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. You’ll be famous!

DANCE FOR THE CLIMATE
There’s nothing like a good ole’ hoppin’ dance party to create a high energy demonstration for change and climate awareness! Let’s make some joyful noise, sing and dance with our fellow purple community hope activists as we bring another festival to a close! Bring the whole family for a good FREE time in the centre of the Park. Let’s together send a message deep in to the heart of Earth through the rhythm of our happy feet!

ENTERTAINMENT on the SUN STAGE – Free!
Relax, dance, sing along to the lineup of live local music including Brandon Humphrey, Sophia Radisch, Wylie Harold, The High Waters Duo & Michelle Prins, who will play throughout the day for us. The unstoppable Michael Bell will MC. Draws for prizes.

Yep! We have one. The Kawartha Loon is the official currency of the festival. Perfectly legal tender that trades at par with the Canadian dollar. This is your chance to be part of building a strong local economy and make a real difference in your community with every KL you spend. As an added bonus you receive a 10% bonus for every KL you buy! Kids are our future and they have a special place in the Purple Onion Festival heart! We’re filling this spot with learning, high energy activities, challenges, story-telling, surprises and treats specially suited for the young ones.

Earth Rights ROCK! YOUTH CHALLENGE
TTP has gathered together some impressive young people with strong voices that the community needs to hear! Come listen to and support these powerful messages of warning, hope, action, frustration and inspiration on our changing world and the effects of climate change from our youngest social activists! We are proud to encourage these brave new voices to speak up loudly for us all!

“PROUD IN PURPLE” PARADE!
Wear your funniest and flashiest purplest clothes, hats, and accessories and join in our ‘Proud in Purple Parade’ conga line just before the Dance of the Climate! Let’s make a loud purple statement ! Purple shows you are proud of Peterborough’s Local Farmers, local business people and local culture! Show them you care by wearing your purply best!
